UBS Downgrades NuScale Power to Sell, Sending SMR Shares Down 11% as Analysts Split the Nuclear Trade

Sep 11, 2026 (PRISM News via COMTEX) --
UBS downgraded NuScale Power Corporation (NYSE: SMR) to Sell from Neutral on Friday and slashed its price target to $6, driving shares down roughly 11% to about $9.09 in morning trading. The call marks the second analyst action to hit the small modular reactor developer in two sessions, and it lands as Wall Street begins pricing advanced nuclear names individually rather than as a single AI-power theme.

Key Points

  • UBS cut NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) to Sell from Neutral with a $6 price target, pushing shares down about 11% Friday.
  • The firm’s bear case rests on a construction timeline it estimates at more than five years, an absence of firm customer commitments, and $700 million in projected cumulative cash burn over the next three years.
  • NuScale reported second-quarter revenue of $75,000 and closed the period with $1.9 billion in cash and investments.
  • The company holds the only U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission design certification in the sector, which management frames as its near-term deployment advantage.
  • Selling pressure concentrated on NuScale specifically: the Global X Uranium ETF slipped just 0.3% while the S&P 500 rose roughly 0.9%.
  • Oklo Inc. (NYSE: OKLO) eased about 7% in sympathy after opening the session down only 2%.

UBS Builds Its Case on Timeline, Commitments and Cash

UBS anchored the downgrade to three concerns. First, the firm models a construction timeline exceeding five years before NuScale delivers operating capacity. Second, it flags the absence of firm customer commitments, a gap that separates NuScale from developers UBS views as closer to breaking ground. Third, UBS projects $700 million of cumulative cash burn across the next three years.

Those estimates arrive at an awkward moment for the income statement. NuScale reported second-quarter revenue of $75,000 -- not millions -- underscoring how far the company sits from commercial generation.

The Balance Sheet Offers a Counterweight

However, NuScale closed the quarter with $1.9 billion in cash and investments, liquidity that comfortably absorbs the burn UBS models. That cushion is the central rebuttal to the downgrade, and it buys management years of runway to convert its regulatory head start into signed contracts.

Chief Executive Officer John Hopkins has consistently argued that NuScale is the near-term deployable option in advanced nuclear. The company backs that claim with the NuScale Power Module(TM), the only SMR design to secure NRC certification, and it commercializes the technology globally through exclusive partner ENTRA1 Energy.

Analysts Stop Treating Advanced Nuclear as One Basket

Meanwhile, the more consequential development may be the dispersion itself. UBS explicitly framed competing SMR developers as closer to construction, concentrating the damage on NuScale rather than the group. The Global X Uranium ETF fell only 0.3% Friday while the broader market advanced, confirming a company-specific reaction rather than a sector repricing.

Piper Sandler reinforced that shift on Thursday, initiating coverage across advanced nuclear with opposing calls on two developers. Taken together, the two actions signal that the sell side has moved from thematic enthusiasm to name-by-name underwriting -- a regime change that matters more to the sector’s long-term investors than any single session’s move.

Where the Stock Stands

NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) has now fallen 31% year to date and trades within reach of its 52-week low of $7.21. The stock’s next leg depends less on AI power demand headlines than on whether management converts its certification advantage into the firm customer commitments UBS says are missing.
