Ondas’ World View Wins U.S. Navy SOUTHCOM Contract for Stratospheric Surveillance Over the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean

Jun 09, 2026 (PRISM News via COMTEX) --

The U.S. military is taking its counter-narcotics and maritime security operations to new heights -- literally.

Ondas Inc. (Nasdaq: ONDS) announced June 2 that its subsidiary World View Enterprises has been selected as the high-altitude balloon provider for a U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Maritime Domain Awareness program. The initial contract totals $4.8 million over three months, with World View deploying stratospheric balloon systems immediately to support counter-narcotics and illegal fishing missions across the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean.

From Demonstration to Deployment

World View didn’t come out of nowhere on this contract. The selection follows the company’s standout performance at UNITAS 2025 -- the world’s longest-running multinational maritime exercise -- where World View partnered with SMX and sensor technology companies to demonstrate persistent maritime surveillance from the stratosphere.

That proof-of-concept turned into a production contract fast.

“This award reflects the trust built through execution,” said Ryan Hartman, CEO of World View. “During UNITAS 2025, our team demonstrated that high-altitude balloon systems can deliver persistent, operationally relevant ISR in support of real maritime missions.”

Why Balloons Beat Traditional ISR Assets

SOUTHCOM’s area of responsibility spans vast ocean environments where conventional surveillance falls short. Satellites pass overhead on fixed schedules. Crewed aircraft are expensive and limited in endurance. Drones cover smaller areas. High-altitude balloons fill a critical gap -- operating from the stratosphere, they deliver long-duration, wide-area coverage that complements every other asset in the fleet.

World View’s systems are purpose-built for exactly this mission profile. With more than 140 stratospheric flight operations completed and payload capacity up to 10,000 kg, the platform has a proven track record with NASA, NOAA, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Air Force.

Building a Multi-Domain ISR Architecture

For Ondas, this contract is more than a single win -- it’s validation of a broader strategic thesis. The company is assembling a layered, multi-domain intelligence platform that spans autonomous aerial systems, robotic ground systems, and now persistent stratospheric sensing.

“By combining World View’s high-altitude platforms with Ondas’ broader autonomous systems portfolio, we are building the type of layered, multi-domain intelligence architecture defense customers need to detect, decide and act with greater speed and confidence,” said Eric Brock, Chairman and CEO of Ondas.

The timing aligns directly with SOUTHCOM’s own strategic direction. The command is actively accelerating its use of autonomous and unmanned systems across the region, linking tactical missions to long-term strategic effects -- precisely the kind of persistent, integrated awareness architecture that World View and Ondas are designed to support.

What Comes Next

The three-month initial contract sets the stage for expansion. With operational support beginning immediately and an active pipeline of defense customers, Ondas is positioning World View as a repeatable, scalable solution for maritime domain awareness -- not just in SOUTHCOM’s AOR, but across allied government and homeland security markets worldwide.

For a company that has already flown missions for the Department of Defense, NASA, and NOAA, the SOUTHCOM award is the latest proof that stratospheric ISR has moved from experimental to operational.
