Rocket Lab Secures $190M Contract for 20 Hypersonic Test Launches, Strengthens Leadership in Defense Technology

Mar 19, 2026 (PRISM News via COMTEX) --

Rocket Lab Corporation (Nasdaq: RKLB) has secured its largest launch agreement to date, signing a $190 million contract to deliver 20 hypersonic test flights using its HASTE launch vehicle. The award comes under the MACH-TB 2.0 program, a U.S. Department of War initiative designed to accelerate hypersonic testing and advance next-generation defense technologies.

The MACH-TB 2.0 program, led by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (Nasdaq: KTOS) in collaboration with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division, aims to rapidly scale hypersonic capabilities. As part of Task Area 1, Rocket Lab will carry out 20 launches over the next four years. Notably, the company plans to execute the first mission just months after contract signing--highlighting its speed, flexibility, and readiness to meet urgent defense demands.

Rocket Lab has already built a strong reputation in hypersonic testing. Since 2023, the company has completed multiple HASTE missions exceeding Mach 5 under the MACH-TB program. Now, with this expanded agreement, Rocket Lab is doubling down on its ability to deliver frequent, reliable launches at scale. Its 100% success rate across all HASTE missions further reinforces its precision and dependability in national security applications.

CEO and founder Sir Peter Beck underscored the importance of the deal, noting that the partnership strengthens U.S. national security while advancing affordable, high-speed hypersonic capabilities. He pointed to Rocket Lab's combination of advanced engineering, rapid launch cadence, and scalable rocket production as key drivers enabling faster experimentation for government and commercial partners alike.

Meanwhile, the new contract significantly boosts Rocket Lab's already growing backlog, which now exceeds 70 launches. Demand continues to surge, with 28 new launches booked in the first quarter of 2026 alone--nearly matching the company's total for all of 2025. This momentum reflects increasing reliance on Rocket Lab's dedicated launch services and further cements the Electron rocket's position as a preferred solution for commercial, civil, and defense missions.

Ultimately, this landmark agreement not only strengthens Rocket Lab's leadership in hypersonic technology but also reinforces its role as a critical player in advancing aerospace innovation and supporting modern defense capabilities.
