Applied Optoelectronics Receives First Volume Order for 1.6T Data Center Transceivers

Mar 12, 2026 (PRISM News via COMTEX) --
Applied Optoelectronics Inc. (NASDAQ: AAOI) announced it has received its first volume order for 1.6-terabit (1.6T) data center transceivers from a long-standing hyperscale cloud customer, marking a key commercial milestone for the company's next-generation optical networking technology. (markets.businessinsider.com)

Applied Optoelectronics Inc. develops high-speed optical networking components used in AI data centers, broadband networks, and telecommunications infrastructure.

Large Order to Support AI Data Center Expansion

The order, valued at more than $200 million, will supply 1.6T transceivers designed to increase network bandwidth for large-scale AI computing workloads inside hyperscale data centers.

Shipments are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and continue through the fourth quarter, following final product qualification and manufacturing ramp-up.

Company leadership noted that as GPU performance and AI cluster sizes continue to expand, data center networks must scale to handle dramatically higher bandwidth requirements, driving demand for faster optical interconnect technologies.

Next Step in High-Speed Optical Networking

The 1.6T products represent the next generation of optical transceivers following earlier 400G and 800G technologies widely deployed in modern cloud infrastructure.

Applied Optoelectronics said its transceiver portfolio now allows customers to deploy a range of speeds -- 400G, 800G, and 1.6T -- depending on data center networking requirements.

The company expects the hyperscale customer behind the order to once again become a 10%-plus revenue contributor, reflecting the scale of the new purchase agreement.

Expanding Manufacturing Capacity

To meet rising demand for high-speed optical interconnects, Applied Optoelectronics is expanding its production footprint. The company is currently increasing manufacturing capacity at its Taiwan facility while constructing a new production site in Sugar Land, Texas.

Once the expansions are completed, the company expects combined U.S. and overseas operations to produce more than 500,000 units per month of 800G and 1.6T transceivers.

Growing Demand From AI Infrastructure

The order highlights the rapidly increasing demand for high-bandwidth networking equipment as hyperscale cloud providers build massive AI training clusters and data center infrastructure.

Optical transceivers serve as the critical links connecting servers, switches, and GPU clusters inside modern AI data centers, enabling the ultra-high-speed communication required for large-scale machine learning workloads.
